The Macchia della Magona (scrubland) is a large forestry area which belongs to the Tuscany region and is managed by the borough of Bibbona. It covers a total surface area of about 1600 hectares along a particularly evocative hillside zone, and just a few kilometres away from the Riviera known as the Coast of the Etruscans, characterised by notable and well known tourist and seaside locations.

Today the Macchia della Magona has lost any references which it once had, that of fuel needed by the trains for the Real Magona di Cecina.  It has instead become an attraction for tourists who love sport and nature.  On the inside of the Macchia della Magona about 16 various routes and maps for naturalists and walkers have been provided, and these cover an area of over 40 kilometres and are easy to follow by foot, horse or mountain bike.

Within the Macchia della Magona there are park sign-posts which indicate particular flowering plants and vegetation (Mediterranean orchids, mushrooms, typical Mediterranean flora) which together with the rich and multicoloured fauna form undoubtedly scientific and environmental interest.  With research and studies being carried out with the Macchia della Magona there is of course a natural bio-genetic park which belongs to the state (Italy), as well as a protected area which is managed in collaboration with the Institute of Experimentation for the Forestry Management of Arezzo.  To testify its value and environmental importance the Macchia della Magona has been classified “bio-tipo” (bio-type) by the C.N.R. (Consiglio Nazionale della Ricerche).(National Council of Research)
